NBC’s ‘Playboy Club’ Is Closed Down By Salt Lake Station

It looks like NBC has been stripped of an outlet for its new series, ‘The Playboy Club,’ before the show can even debut this fall. KSL, a network affiliate in Salt Lake City, Utah, has opted not to carry the show, which stars Eddie Cibrian and David Krumholtz and examines life in the early ‘60s through the staffers and clientele at Chicago’s legendary Playboy Club. In a statement on the station’s website, KSL president and CEO Mark Willes said, “’The Playboy brand is known internationally. Everyone is clear what it stands for. We want to be sure everyone is clear what the KSL brand stands for, which is completely inconsistent with the Playboy brand.” Adds programming director Michelle Torsak, “Our intent is not to tell people what they can and cannot watch, but rather to share programming with our audience in accordance with our mission.”

The station, which also declines to air ‘Saturday Night Live,’ will apparently look for other options that would allow the series to be seen in the Salt Lake market, but no decisions have made yet. The decision isn’t sitting well with all Salt Lake residents, however. Salt Lake City Tribune columnist Scott D. Pierce wrote that “the obvious message KSL is sending is — we don’t care if a show is adult as long as it doesn’t have the word ‘Playboy’ in the title…I can say without hesitation that every episode of ‘Law & Order: SVU’ is more ‘adult’ than the pilot of ‘The Playboy Club,’ and KSL has aired almost 300 episodes of that show.”

Whether or not the publicity buzz KSL’s move generates will help or hurt ‘The Playboy Club’ remains to be seen, and NBC has yet to release any comment on the situation. In the meantime, here’s a look at the promotional trailer for the series.
