Every once in a while there is a dance where the stars align and the perfect partner, choreographer, routine, music, and magic all come together. On “So You Think You Can Dance” Wednesday night, that dance belonged to Melanie Moore and Marko Germar, who performed a contemporary number by Travis Wall to the tune of Ingrid Michaelson’s “Turn to Stone.”
Not quite sure who these two are just yet? She’s the strong 19-year-old contemporary dancer from Marietta, Georgia who looks like she could be Ginnifer Goodwin’s quirky little sister. He’s the 22-year-old Jazz cutie from Guam with the funky haircut. Together, they danced as a pair for the first time on the Top 20 performance show covered in white powder (to look like statues) – and gave the judges and audience chills, thrills, and tears.
Meet the Top 20 Dancers:
“Chills, crying, I mean, it was so beautiful you guys, both of you,” said guest judge Megan Mullally. “It’s one of those special ones. As Oprah would say, ‘Wow, wow, wow.’ Amazing.”
Mary Murphy – choking up as she talked – said, “Melanie, Marko, I think you both had all of us judges, from the second we first saw you until now … you both had us at hello. It’s just breathtaking.”
But it was executive producer/judge Nigel Lythgoe’s remark that really made the point: “Well, it’s the first week and this could possibly be the first Emmy-nominated routine,” followed by, “You, for me, are the Queen of the Beasts [Nigel’s been calling the women ‘beasts’ all season]. I don’t believe we have ever had a better girl dancer on this show than we have in you.”
We caught up with Melanie and Marko after the show to bask in their glow of the magical evening:
What did you make of Nigel’s Emmy-worthy performance comment? Best comment ever, right?
Melanie: Ever! Best compliment ever.
Marko: Especially in the first show. I couldn’t believe it. It was so surreal. It’s like, am I really hearing him say that? Like, this is the first show, first week.
Melanie to Marko: Love you.
Marko to Melanie: Love you back.
Melanie: Everything was in our favor tonight. It went so well. We didn’t have the best rehearsal. It wasn’t a bad rehearsal. We had just done it better so we were both a little nervous going into it. We wanted to make sure it was as good as it could be and it definitely came together onstage.
Why do you think it came together so perfectly?
Marko: The make-up, the audience… We said a prayer before we went onstage.
Melanie: To let the nerves go and just get out there and dance.
How was Travis Wall?
Melanie: He’s amazing. He really set it to our bodies. He had a piece already with Jamie Goodwin [‘SYTYCD’ Season 3] that he had done and Robert as his assistant, and he came back in and said he wanted it to be perfect and I want it to be you guys. So we’re gonna rework it and fit it on ya’lls bodies.
Does it put more pressure on you to beat it next week?
Melanie: I definitely think it does put some pressure on, but we can handle the pressure, right?
Marko: Yeah, we’re good. We’re a good partnership, good chemistry and we’re gonna carry each other throughout the whole time.
