When Jennifer Lopez told BBC Radio 1 this week that she was “on the fence” about returning to “American Idol,” the show’s executive producer didn’t exactly have a panic attack.

“I don’t know if she’s on the fence,” Nigel Lythgoe told us at his other show, “So You Think You Can Dance.” “You’d have to read into that a little more.”

Hmmm, what does he mean by that?

Thanks to the Lopez and fellow judge Steven Tyler, “Idol” celebrated its tenth season in fine style – with improved ratings, record setting votes, and genuine excitement. Most fans would agree, J-Lo and Mr. Aerosmith need to return. They might be harder to replace than Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul.

So what’s behind Lopez’s fence-sitting?

“She’s in a very good position,” Lythgoe continued. “And I know how much she enjoyed ‘Idol.’ But she’s got a lot of offers. She’s doing a movie now. She’s got to be thinking like everyone would, how does my career pan out now? Because she’s got two beautiful young children she needs to worry about them too. So I certainly haven’t given up on her coming back.”

If she didn’t come back?

“If she doesn’t come back, I could only wish her well and say she’s so much fun to work with,” Lythgoe added. “I’ll just keep my fingers crossed.”
