Carol Burnett Returns to ‘All My Children’

Carol Burnett, a longtime fan of “All My Children,” will appear on the show for several episodes this September. She will once again play Verla Grubbs, a role she created in 1983. Verla is the daughter of Pine Valley con man turned patriarch Langley Wallingford (Louis Edmonds) and a snakecharmer. Her character interacted primarily with Pheobe (Ruth Warwick) and Myrtle (Eileen Herlie), who have passed away. According to an ABC press release, this time Verla will visit Erica (Susan Lucci) and Opal (Jill Larson).

Burnett joins A-list AMC alums Josh Duhamel and Eva LaRue, who are also returning to the long-running soap during its final months on the air. The legendary comedienne, who  recently appeared as Sue Sylvester’s mother on “Glee,” chose to join AMC during the 1980s because of her love for the show. She was following in the footsteps of Elizabeth Taylor, who appeared on “General Hospital” year before. Celebrity soap appearances have become trendy again, with James Franco playing a recurring role on GH and Julianne Moore reprised her role on “As the World Turns” during the show’s final weeks. It remains to be seen whether Rosie O’Donnell, another AMC fan who appeared on several episodes of the show as an outspoken housekeeper named Naomi, will also make a return to the show.
