Ralph and Karen Guastaferro are probably wishing they could trade lives with somebody right about now. The Buffalo, New York couple, who appeared on the ABC reality show “Wife Swap” in 2008, was sentenced on federal charges Monday following their guilty pleas last year.
Ralph S. Guastaferro Jr., 64, was sentenced to two years in prison and a $100,000 fine for money laundering. Karen Guastaferro, 56, received three years probation and six months house arrest for failing to pay taxes. She also owes $56,670 in restitution to the IRS, in part, for failing to declare wages for half her employees at the glass tinting shop the couple owned. Ralph also admitted laundering $1.2 million in illegal proceeds for a Canadian telemarketing scheme.
In the 2008 episode, the couple was featured with their beauty pageant daughter Alicia, then 15, who received a brand new Chevy Tahoe that year – even though she wasn’t old enough to drive it. Karen explained that the family believed in giving Alicia a present a day.
“We do have a Christmas tree year-round and she does get a gift every day. It’s not like big gifts every day, but she does get a small reward, like makeup or small item. It’s kind of like the simple, enjoy every day — It’s Christmas every day,” Karen said on the show.
Alicia was shown saying she feels “sorry for people that are not gorgeous people” and that she lived a “carefree life” without any chores.
