Forget Dunder Mifflin – James Spader is moving all the way up the paper chain.

An NBC press release confirms that Spader will be joining the cast of “The Office” as a series regular when the comedy returns this fall. The former “Boston Legal” star will reprise the role of manipulative salesman Robert California. But instead of vying for the title of Dunder Mifflin head honcho – as he did in last season’s finale –  he’ll have taken over the spot of CEO of Sabre, Dunder Mifflin’s parent company.

“He’ll have been hired over the summer as the new manager, but within hours, got himself promoted. Within days, he took over the company,” said series star and co-executive producer Paul Lieberstein. “James has an energy that is completely his own, and ‘The Office’ has no tools for dealing with this guy. We’re thrilled he’s joining our cast.”

Of course, the addition of Spader won’t serve as a replacement for departed Scranton branch boss Michael Scott (Steve Carell). While the search to fill his vacancy is still ongoing,  TVLine.com believes the choice has been narrowed to three internal candidates: Jim (John Krasinski), Andy (Ed Helms), and Dwight (Rainn Wilson).

“The Office” returns for an eighth season this fall on NBC.
