Another day, another shakeup at ratings-challenged CNN. This time it’s Eliot Spitzer who’s getting the heave-ho from the news channel’s prime-time lineup, according to various reports on Wednesday, starting with The Hollywood Reporter.

Spitzer’s show, currently titled “In the Arena with Eliot Spitzer,” will be out of the arena by Monday, Aug. 8, when a new temporary lineup will be put in place, the stories say.

“Spitzer” will be replaced at 8 p.m./7c with a live broadcast of Anderson Cooper’s “AC360” news show, which will then be rebroadcast in Cooper’s current 10 p.m. time period (9c).

This fall, most likely in September, CNN will launch a new 8 p.m. show anchored by Erin Burnett, recently hired from CNBC. “AC360” will go back to broadcasting live at 10 o’clock (9c) and “Piers Morgan Tonight” will remain at 9/8c. And so, Spitzer’s show – which premiered last October as “Parker Spitzer,” with co-host Katherine Parker – lasted less than a year. “We provided diverse and valuable perspectives during the show’s tenure,” Spitzer said in a statement. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time at CNN.”

Well, we’re glad he enjoyed it because apparently not enough viewers did. The show had a rocky history from the start as some viewers voiced their dislike of Spitzer, who resigned as governor of New York in disgrace following a sex scandal. And the chemistry between Spitzer and Parker never gelled – leading CNN to drop her months ago. And now, the other shoe – Spitzer himself – has been dropped.

And CNN continues to search for just the right mix of programs and personalities that will allow it to compete more assertively with Fox News Channel first and foremost and, to a lesser extent MSNBC.
