Enthusiasm for Sitcom’s Return Leads to Big Ratings

Taking 19 months off seems like it was a “pretty, pretty good” idea for “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Why? Because, apparently, fans of the show were so eager to see it return that this past Sunday’s season premiere drew the show’s biggest audience in seven years, an enthusiastic HBO reported on Tuesday.

Viewership for the start of the storied sitcom’s eighth season amounted to 1.7 million viewers for the 10 p.m. (9c) premiere telecast. The figure was 53 percent higher than the premiere episode for Season Seven, HBO said. In addition, HBO tallied another 394,000 viewers tuning in for a second showing of the eighth-season premiere Sunday night – bringing the premiere-night total for “Curb” to 2.1 million.

“Curb” may have been aided by the third episode of “True Blood,” which preceded the Larry David comedy with 5 million viewers (plus another 1.1 million for another airing later in the evening), HBO disclosed.

There was no statement from David in the HBO ratings press release, but we imagine he would likely say something like, “Pretty, pretty, pretty good,” unless, of course, he has decided to curb his enthusiasm and wait ’til the ratings for the next episode come out.
