Tommy Gavin has been haunted by many ghosts throughout the seven years of “Rescue Me,” but none have loomed larger than the Twin Towers. When the FX series returns for its seventh and final season Wednesday, Gavin (Denis Leary) will be trying to cope with the ten-year anniversary of 9/11. And, as is his way, he’ll find a way to mess that up, too.

As the darkly, foully comedic drama returns, Sheila (Callie Thorne) is still coping with life with her brain damaged son Damian, who was hurt on the job. She finds an unlikely ally much closer to home than Tommy would prefer.

Meanwhile, Tommy confronts Janet about her pregnancy and they make one last, last attempt – after the last final attempt – to make things work.

At the firehouse, the guys are going crazy during a stretch without fires and Lou is continuing to deny he has serious health issues. In the second episode, the guys go to elaborate lengths to help Lou pass his mandatory physical, but it might not be enough.

Maura Tierney also returns next week as Kelly, Tommy’s former confidant and love interest, in a story arc that borrows from the actress’s own battle with breast cancer.

In the premiere, Black Shawn (Larenz Tate) has decided he’s ready to settle down with Tommy’s daughter Colleen, who is also a recovering alcoholic, getting some dubious sobriety advice from her formerly drunken uncles Teddy and Mickey. The plans for their wedding bring out an unexpected side and hidden talent in Mike (Michael Lombardi).

As the season continues, a news reporter will interview members of the firehouse about 9/11 and, naturally, everyone is worried what Tommy might say or do. Their fears might turn out to be well-founded.

“Rescue Me” will return for its final nine episode season beginning Wednesday at 10 pm. on FX.
