Dave Hosts Midsummer Masterpiece with U2, Mom’s ‘Top Ten’

There was something very intimate about David Letterman’s “Late Show” Monday night on CBS.

Didn’t it feel different from the usual late-night show? Late-night TV shows nowadays are usually so circus-like and noisy – that’s how TV shows stand out in the feverishly competitive TV world, by turning up the volume.

But not Dave’s “Late Show” Monday. Maybe it was the sweltering summer heat in New York (though, presumably, it was cool in the Ed Sullivan Theater, the way Dave likes it), but the show just felt quieter than normal. Yes – even with the Spider Man character who hung upside down in front of Dave!

Spidey turned up because Dave’s guests were U2’s Bono and The Edge – long-time bandmates, friends and co-creators of “Spider Man: Turn Off the Dark,” the most troubled production in the history of Broadway (yes, even more notorious than the infamous Rosie O’Donnell-produced bomb “Taboo”). Bono and The Edge have been gamely trying to drum up support for their musical, which reopened last month after about a month of drastic re-tuning following about a year of missteps, injuries and critical pans.

Whatever the fate of “Spidey: The Musical,” we’ll always love Bono and The Edge. And it was a great moment on “Late Show” when The Edge took up an acoustic guitar and Bono sang their 2000 song “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of,” a tender ballad that Bono wrote following the suicide of his friend, INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence (according to Wikipedia here).

Earlier in the show, Dave welcomed an appearance by his mother, Dorothy, from her home in Indiana. She’s been a fixture on “Late Show” since 1994, but as she’s aged, she’s turned up less and less frequently. Not that she isn’t still spry. She turned 90 on Monday (July 18) and Dave invited her to deliver a “Top Ten” list from her kitchen – “Pieces of Wisdom from Dave’s Mom.” Here’s a sampling: “No. 10: Paying taxes is for losers!” “No. 9: Neighbor’s stereo too loud? Cut his power lines!” And “No. 8: If you’re gonna vandalize the Ed Sullivan Theater, disable the security cameras first!”
