“Game of Thrones” has found its powerful sorceress and wannabe king.
According to EW, the roles of Melisandre and Stannis Baratheon have been cast. The sorceress Melisandre will be played by Dutch actress Carice van Houten. Her credits include “Valkyrie” and “Repo Men.” While Stannis, the brother of the late King Robert who seeks to claim the Iron Throne, will be played by British actor Stephen Dillane. Dillane is best known as the womanizing Thomas Jefferson in “John Adams.”
Melisandre is described as “a seductive force possessing prophetic powers who’s willing to impose her religion on the world by any means necessary.” Stannis, who believes his rightful place is at King’s Landing, is referred to has “humorless and authoritative.” His youngest brother Renly, who was first introduced in Season 1, also seeks control of the Throne.
Both characters’ stories will be intertwined, as Melisandre will offer Stannis counsel during his quest for power.
Dilane and van Houten join previously announced newcomer Gwendoline Christie in the role of Briennne, Maid of Tarth when Season 2 premieres in 2012.
