Katie Couric’s first appearance as a newly hired ABC News personality will be on “The View” as a guest host, ABC announced late Wednesday.

The former CBS News anchor, who ABC hired as soon as her CBS contract expired in June, will make her ABC debut on “The View” on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

There was no word in the press release on who Couric might be subbing for that day, if anyone. Nor did it say if Couric would stick around for more than the one day. The announcement noted that that week is the final week of the season for “The View,” which will then go on hiatus until its 15th season premieres in September.

And so, the new Katie Couric era at ABC is set to begin. Still to come: Her new daytime talk show, which won’t debut for more than a year, in September 2012. In the meantime, she is expected to make contributions to other ABC News broadcasts, including “World News with Diane Sawyer” and “Good Morning America.”

Obviously, Couric could serve as a sub on either of those shows since she has anchoring and morning-show experience. This stint on “The View,” though it’s only for one day, would seem to be designed to showcase her skills in a talk setting — skills she’ll need in abundance when she enters the afternoon talk-show fray next year.
