It’s always nice when those who make TV celebrate the greats from previous decades. No show is better than “Hot in Cleveland,” whose guest stars have included Carl Reiner, Tim Conway, Mary Tyler Moore and John Schneider, among others. But CBS’s mega-hit “NCIS” has also paid tribute by reaching into TV’s storied past when casting the extended family of their characters. Ralph Waite and Robert Wagner have both played fathers of the show’s cops, Gibbs and DeNozzi. The show’s latest trick? Lily Tomlin has been tapped to play McGee’s grandmother. “We are very excited to have the gifted Lily Tomlin join us to play McGee’s grandmother,” NCIS exec producer Gary Glasberg told Entertainment Weekly, which first reported the casting news. “We know she’ll bring extraordinary heart and pathos and humor to the show and the cast and crew are thrilled to have her. But don’t let the word grandmother fool you. Penelope is sharp as a tack and we’re about to learn some things about McGee’s family that have never been revealed.”
