Saturday’s “Vampire Diaries” panel at San Diego Comic-Con began with a very revealing clip from season three: Elena (Nina Dobrev) walks into a room and encounters a naked Damon (Ian Sommerhalder). She is startled. He slyly apologizes for being indecent. While executive producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec were quite willing to share almost all of Damon’s body with the show’s family, they were far more reticent with details about what will happen in Mystic Falls. One thing seems clear: this season Damon’s feelings for Elena won’t be entirely one-sided.

Season two ended with good guy Stefan (Paul Wesley) going bad after Klaus (Joseph Morgan) forced him to kill a human and become his minion. That will put Damon in the new position of being the more stable Salvatore brother. Said Sommerhalder, “He’s tried for two seasons to get his brother to do what he wanted him to do. To destroy everything that mattered to him. Now, [Stefan’s] actually doing that. But it’s killing him.” Williamson adds, “It’s one of those reluctant hero stories… It plays out and explodes in his face.”

There will be an explanation for Klaus’s obsession with turning Stefan to the dark side. Said Morgan, “We’re going to find out a lot more about the motive and history of him taking Stefan.” As for Klaus’s brother Elijah (Daniel Gilles), who ended last season in a state of suspended animation thanks to being stabbed with the sword that is powerful enough to kill originals, Plec assured the audience, “We will definitely see Elijah again.”

Williamson implied that a full-fledged Stefan-Elena-Damon triangle will develop. “Katherine told her last season that it’s okay to love them both.”
