The warrior sport of jousting is apparently going through a Renaissance, of sorts, thanks to two new jousting-themed reality shows coming soon to a TV near you.

The National Geographic Channel treated TV critics gathered Thursday at its annual summer press tour in Los Angeles to a preview clip of “Knights of Mayhem,” a new five-part series that puts the “evil” in medieval.

Taking on extreme sports as the modern age and olden times collide, literally, the reality show follows a group of hard-core knights as they compete in tournaments across the country. The leader of the armored pack – described as men of “hard steel and sex appeal” – is Charlie Andrews, reigning world champion of the Ultimate Jousting Championship organization.

“When you hit each other with 11-foot solid lances, one of you could get killed, and that is a reality,” says Andrews. The network’s description of the show comes with this brutal bit: “The impact of battle brings risks of broken bones, concussions and even collapsed lungs.”

And it’s looking like an epic reality battle in more ways than one. The History Channel is also taking a stab at their own version of a jousting competition called “Full Metal Jousting,” which is currently casting and offering up a $100k prize to the last Lancelot standing.

“Knights of Mayhem” premieres this fall on the National Geographic Channel. No airdate has been set for History’s “Full Metal Jousting.”
