“Real Time with Bill Maher” has been renewed for a 10th season, HBO announced Thursday at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Beverly Hills.
“Bill is probably one of the most iconic HBO personalities,” said Quentin Schaffer, HBO’s evp of corporate communications. Schaffer noted that between his numerous comedy specials and “Real Time,” Maher has been with the network for a span of twenty years.
Following the news, Maher himself made a surprise appearance to share his appreciation for the pickup and offer a bit of his signature schtick.
“I’m here representing the Hollywood elite,” he said to a ballroom full of reporters. “Whenever I speak to a media group like this, I think – at least we’re not welfare queens.”
Maher quickly went on to praise HBO. “As I said when I joined this network – it’s nice to be on a network that I myself watch. I’ve been on other networks and I didn’t watch their s–t,” he joked. “I didn’t watch ‘Dharma and Greg.'”
“Real Time” was just nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Variety, Music, or Comedy Series category. Season 10 will kick off in 2012.
