Gloria Steinem TV Addict? Yep – and Guess Her Favorite Show

Gloria Steinem is lending her endorsement to a boycott of “The Playboy Club.”

The legendary women’s rights activist – who famously went undercover as a bunny in 1963 at Hugh Hefner’s New York man cave – says the upcoming NBC drama sends the wrong message to young men.

“There is a kind of horrible fascination and there is a lot of money there,” she told reporters while promoting a new HBO documentary in Los Angeles Thursday.

“But somehow I don’t feel threatened by that.  I feel dismayed that young men are subjected to that — and made to feel that is a mark of masculinity.”

Steinem, 77, admits her feminist views have created a love-hate relationship with her television.

“I throw my slippers at the set with regularity,” the legendary women’s rights activist tells us.  “(But) I am as hooked as anyone else.  I have a set in my bathroom when I am brushing my teeth.”

The jury is still out, she says, on ABC’s upcoming remake of “Charlie’s Angels.”

And MTV’s “Teen Mom”?

“I have only seen it two or three times, but I do understand that they have presented a variety of situations including women who have chosen to have an abortion.  And young women who have chosen to give up their child or keep their child.  If they show all the alternatives, I think that is helpful.

“But what they are not doing is pointing out that a major reason we are spending 11 billion a year on unwanted births is because of the Bush administration’s abstinence-only sex education in the schools.  The only advanced democracy in the world that doesn’t regard sex education as a normal part of education—including contraception.”

Steinem says one of her favorite shows to watch is “The Glee Project.”

“I like it because they are talented and they are all different shapes and sizes,” she tells XFinityTV.  “They are great.  I don’t love competition part, but I do love that everyone is so diverse.”

Steinems new documentary, “Gloria: In Her Own Words,” will air on HBO.
