Ernie, will you take Bert to be your lawfully wedded Muppet-Husband? That’s the question that LGBT activist Lair Scott hopes to hear as he pushes forth a petition for the “Sesame Street” roommates to wed, reports Time.
With New York state legalizing same-sex marriage just this past June, and considering Archie Comics recently introduced its first gay character, some people feel it just makes sense that the progressive children’s TV show, which has covered sensitive topics such as race, HIV, self-acceptance, and death, should follow suit.

While Scott feels that Bert and Ernie’s union could significantly help struggling LGBT kids “know that they ARE BEAUTIFUL and their lives are worth living,” opponents fear that marriage between the two iconic Muppets could possibly confuse children (e.g. When two men live together, does that mean they’re automatically gay?), while others argue that the show shouldn’t tread on politicized issues.
“We are not asking that ‘Sesame Street’ do anything crude or disrespectful,”’ Scott states on his online petition. “Only that they allow Bert & Ernie to marry or even add a transgender character to the show. It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different.”
In response, a spokesperson for “Sesame Street” dismissed the notion that the domestic duo are nothing more than “best friends with no sexual orientation.”
Tell that to the 1,100-plus supporters who’ve signed Scott’s petition thus far.
