‘Entourage’ Preview: What’s in a Name?

It might not rank up there with the mystery of Kramer’s first name on “Seinfeld,” but for “Entourage” fans, the revelation of Mrs. Ari’s real first name has been long in coming.

It’s taken nearly eight seasons, all the way up until this Sunday’s episode (Aug. 28) – the sixth episode (and one of the last) of this show’s eight-episode eighth season.

Naturally, we won’t spoil this tantalizing tidbit of trivia by revealing it here (yes, we’ve seen the episode). We won’t even reveal which scene it’s in, why it gets uttered, or who utters it. We just want you to be aware of it so you can watch out for it because it’s fleeting.

Plus, it really has no bearing on the plot in this episode, which carries the cheeky title “The Big Bang” in honor of the guest appearance of Johnny Galecki, star of “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS. His appearance will have a big impact on E (Kevin Connolly) as he struggles with his breakup with Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui). And in this season’s other plotlines, Drama (Kevin Dillon) has joined Andrew Dice Clay in his strike against the producer of their fledgling animated series, and Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) hits some snags in his plan to open a branch of his favorite New York restaurant in L.A.

But we’ll recap all that stuff – plus the stories of Vince (Adrian Grenier) and Ari (Jeremy Piven), and Mrs. Ari’s real name – on Monday morning. On the latter subject, we’re fascinated that the “Entourage” producers got away with calling this character “Mrs. Ari” (played by Perrey Reeves) for all these years.

It’s one of only a handful of instances in TV history where a major character’s full name was withheld. Here’s a handful we remembered:

Cosmo Kramer: Kramer’s first name was kept under wraps until the sixth season of “Seinfeld” in 1995. The revelation caused a sensation as newspapers ran guessing-game contests before the episode – “The Switch” – aired on Jan. 5. No one guessed it though – who would guess Cosmo? The name was revealed when it was blurted out by Kramer’s estranged mother, Babs (Sheree North).

Newman: Coincidentally, the mystery of Newman’s name – is it his first? His last? And what is his full name? – went unsolved on “Seinfeld.” Reportedly, actor Wayne Knight is greeted by strangers saying, “Hello, Newman!” everywhere he goes.

Gilligan: Was this the famed first mate’s first name or last? It was never revealed in any episode of “Gilligan’s Island,” but the series’ creator, Sherwood Schwartz, once said he envisioned the character’s full name as “Willy Gilligan,” though the name never made it into any script.

But I digress! “Entourage” airs Sunday night at 10:30/9:30c on HBO.
