The Big Bang Theory

From the same production team responsible for Two and a Half Men, the CBS “nerd-com” ‘The Big Bang Theory‘ clued the viewer in on what to expect right from the get-go by naming its two main characters “Sheldon” and “Leonard” (though all resemblance to the famous gangster actor-turned-TV producer ended right there!) They were both brilliant physicists, living together in a technology-cluttered apartment, and spending their free time with a circle of fellow geeks from Cal Tech. And, need we add, of course, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) were despite their hyper-intelligence hopelessly “backward” on a social level; after all, it isn’t easy to pick up girls when the only things you know how to talk about are isotopes and video games. Our heroes were thrown for a mobius strip when the incredibly beautiful and voluptuous Penny (Kaley Cuoco), a recent divorcee, moved into the apartment next door. Jim Parsons recently picked up his second consecutive Emmy for Best Actor in a Comedy series. Buy the Season 4 DVD right here.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

In an idealized New York City during the early ’60s, Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) is a charming socialite with a youthful zest for life who lives alone in a nearly bare apartment in the classic ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s.’ She has such a flippant lifestyle that she won’t even give her cat a name, because that would be too much of a commitment to a relationship. Maintaining a childlike innocence yet wearing the most perfect of designer clothes and accessories from Givenchy, she spends her time on expensive dates and at high-class parties. She escorts various wealthy men, yet fails to return their affections after they have given her gifts and money. Holly’s carefree independence is changed when she meets her neighbor, aspiring writer Paul (George Peppard), who is suffering from writer’s block while being kept by a wealthy woman (Patricia Neal). Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Unable to find a room in any of the four-star hotels, Neal is compelled to accept Del’s invitation to share his accommodations in a cheapo-sleazo motel. Driven to distraction by Del’s annoying personal habits, the ungrateful Neal lets forth with a stream of verbal abuse. That’s when Del delivers the anticipated (but always welcome) “I don’t judge, why should you?”-type speech so common to John Hughes flicks. The shamefaced Neal tries to make up to Del, but there’s a bumpy time ahead as the mismatched pair make their way back to Chicago, first in a balky train, then by way of a refrigerator truck. Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer

New York City. 1958. In these concrete canyons, everybody’s got an angle: The beauty with the sob story who killed her old man. The harmless geezer who’s in bed with the mob. The kidnapped broad who’s really a fraud. When a case gets too twisted for the cops, only one man can straighten it out: two-fisted gumshoe Mike Hammer. Created by legendary crime novelist Mickey Spillane, Mike Hammer was brought to television for the first time in 1958, with Darren McGavin (A Christmas Story, Murphy Brown) as the hardboiled private eye. Pummeled for its “excessive and gratuitous violence” (by 1950’s standards), the show was, nevertheless, instantly successful — thanks, in part, to Gavin’s tongue-in-cheek charm. Now available for the first time ever on DVD in ‘Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer: The Complete Series,’ fans can at long last enjoy all 78 episodes of this groundbreaking, eagerly sought-after series! A must-have collectible for any crime/mystery/film noir fan, the never-before-released cult-classic features appearances from TV legends Angie Dickinson (“Police Woman”), Marion Ross (“Happy Days”), DeForest Kelly (“Star Trek”), Barbara Bain (“Space: 1999”), Ted Knight (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”) and Lorne Greene (“Bonanza”) and is truly classic TV at its finest. Airplane!‘ – the spoof of the Airport series of disaster movies relies on ridiculous sight gags, clever dialogue, and deadpan acting — a comedy style that would be imitated for the next 20 years. Airplane! pulls out all the stops as alcoholic pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays), who’s developed a fear of flying due to wartime trauma, boards a jumbo jet in an attempt to woo back his stewardess girlfriend (Julie Hagerty). Food poisoning decimates the passengers and crew, leaving it up to Striker to land the plane, with the help of a glue-sniffing air traffic controller (Lloyd Bridges) and Striker’s vengeful former captain (Robert Stack), who must both talk him down. Along the way, we meet a clutch of stock disaster movie passengers like the guitar-strumming nun, a sick little girl, a frightened old lady, and two African-American travelers whose “jive” has to be subtitled. Leslie Nielsen portrays the plane’s doctor, launching a new phase of the actor’s career that carried him through the next two decades in several similarly comedic roles. Buy the Blu-ray right here.

It’s the summer of 1863, more than two years into our nation’s devastating Civil War, and the stakes have never been higher. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, led by Robert E. Lee, crosses into Pennsylvania. Trailed by the Union’s Army of the Potomac, Lee’s 75,000-strong army heads toward Harrisburg, but the forces meet instead near ‘Gettysburg,’ a quiet farm town that would become synonymous with the epic battle that all but decided the outcome of the American Civil War. For three long days, the two sides clashed in one of the war’s bloodiest engagements to decide the ultimate question: Would the United States of America survive? Executive produced by Ridley and Tony Scott, ‘Gettysburg’ strips away the romanticized veneer of the Civil War to present the pivotal Battle of Gettysburg in a new light–a visceral, terrifying and deeply personal experience, fought by men who put everything on the line in defense of their vision of the American future. Cinematic in scope, ‘Gettysburg’ is a groundbreaking, information-packed look at the turning points, strategic decisions, technology and little-known facts surrounding the battle. Developed in collaboration with highly esteemed Civil War historians, ‘Gettysburg’ reflects hundreds of individual accounts of the battle–the unique voices of struggle, defeat and triumph that tell the larger story of a bitterly conflicted nation.
