Cheryl Hines made an indelible mark as the beleaguered wife of Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” but she’s doing a complete 180 for her new role on ABC’s new sitcom “Suburgatory” as the trophy wife of all trophy wives.
As Dallas Royce she sports longer, blonder hair, big push-up bras, and has an affinity for tight flashy clothes (preferably pink and leopard) with hemlines dangerously high, and says things like, “Oh my Gosh! Look how cute these boyfriend shorts are!”

While this is a far cry from Cheryl David or the real Ms. Hines, the actress admits there’s one part of her new wardrobe she secretly likes. “There’s a little part of me that loves having giant boobs, just once, even if they aren’t real,” she says. “Although the fittings, they’re long and everything has to be hemmed six inches. It is very involved but it’s fun.”
Hines has also has fun running into these real life trophy wives on the street. “I do carpool. I do PTA,” she explains. “There are people that are exactly like this woman. They take great pride in it. I was actually talking to another mom, and I was telling her about the show, and I was telling her about my character. And I said, ‘The hair extensions. It looks like I have a boob job. I have my eyebrows raised.’ I said, ‘The spray tan.’ And she said, ‘Oh, my God. That sounds like me.'”
But the joke’s not entirely on them: “Sure, I think some people will see this is kind of laugh at these people, but some will say, ‘Oh that woman looks pretty glamorous,'” she says.
On the differences between “Curb” and “Suburg,” she says, “‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ is meant to feel like a documentary and everything’s low key. And, you know, we didn’t even have a hair stylist for the first four seasons of the show, so it was really an exploration of Larry’s neurosis. And here, this is just a completely different feeling, because Emily [Kapnek, show creator] has created this entire world and in it’s heightened reality and it’s very precise. All the dialogue is very clever and smart, and it’s been clearly written as opposed to ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.'”
“Suburgatory” – starring Jeremy Sisto, Jane Levy, Rex Lee, and Allie Grant – debuts Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 8:30/7:30c on ABC.
