“Two and a Half Men” included a new twist on a time-honored gimmick — a same-sex kiss, but this time it was between men, not women.
And who was doing the kissing? Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer. No, the two characters they play on “Two and a Half Men” have not gone over to the other team, although the kiss was meant to persuade two women that they had.
Confused? Let’s explain:
The kiss happened on Monday night’s episode of “Two and a Half Men.” It happened in a bar, after Walden (Kutcher) and Alan (Cryer) went to the movies together to try and get Walden’s mind off of his ex-wife, Bridget (Judy Greer).
However, the movie only depressed Walden even more and he vowed to get very drunk. Just then, a woman wearing a business suit and black-rimmed glasses bellied up to the bar and naive Walden decided he’d introduce himself.
She informed him that she was “with someone” and that someone turned out to be a buxom blonde. To emphasize her meaning, the woman in the suit turned and planted a wet kiss on her blonde companion.
And that’s when Walden decided he’d do the same to his own companion, who happened to be Alan.
Since the 1990s, the same-sex kiss between women on TV has been a time-honored gimmick for drumming up publicity in the hopes of increasing ratings. However, this particular kiss between Kutcher and Cryer was not publicized in advance, which was a good thing because it worked much better as a surprise.
