Glenn Beck broke down in tears during an interview with Kathie Lee Gifford on Wednesday’s “Today” show. The former Fox News host spoke to Gifford about growing up in an alcoholic and abusive home, which he drew inspiration from for his new novel, “The Snow Angel.”

Beck opened up about his mother’s death (she drowned in an apparent suicide), which he said was never addressed by his family. He started to cry while recalling his father excusing abuse as “generational.”

He said he has no regrets about his departure from Fox News last June.  He’s committed to broadcasting over the Internet on his GBTV and is done with big corporations. “I really don’t care anymore,” he said, adding, “I think that networks are a thing of the past.”

Gifford concluded the interview by asking the outspoken and often controversial Beck if the life he lives – which includes a heavy protective security detail – was “worth it.”

“Only he [pointing up] will answer that,” Beck responded. “I don’t know. I wouldn’t want to be my kids. I wouldn’t want to be my wife. But it’s what comes with it – good and bad.”
