Husband and wife Bill Klein and Jen Arnold received heartbreaking news on Tuesday’s season finale of “The Little Couple.” After learning about the successful transfer of an embryo to their surrogate earlier in the episode, they later discovered that the surrogate had suffered a miscarriage.
Both Jen and Bill have skeletal dysplasia, a bone-growth disorder which causes dwarfism. The decision to use a surrogate was made due to the potential health risks posed to Jen if she conceived.
Klein, who was the first to hear about the miscarriage, informed his wife of the loss while she was at work.
“I didn’t want her to be the last person to find out,” Klein told People. “Ugly or happy, it needs to be told. It was a very tough day, and Jen took it harder than she originally expected.”
“I cried my eyes out,” Arnold, a neonatologist at Texas Children’s Hospital, said to People. “I deal with families who lose their babies and I will cry with them, but I thought I would be stronger. Nothing can completely prepare for all that when it is about you.”
Despite the setback, the couple insists they will continue to explore options for having a baby – be it through adoption or another surrogate. In a statement on their Facebook page, the two thanked fans for their support and said that despite this hardship, “we remain upbeat and focused on growing our family. The story doesn’t end here … we promise.”
