After a performance early this year that left eyebrows raised and mouths open, Ricky Gervais may be returning to once again rattle celebrities for the 2012 Golden Globes. In fact, since the story broke in the New York Post that Gervias was going to go for his third hosting gig in a row, the press-savvy comedian and producer did little to shoot down the reports, telling Entertainment Weekly that “Last time I said I was in talks to host again, everyone said I was lying. So I’m saying nothing.”

Some celebrity-driven jokes left many Hollywood observers shocked last January so much so that Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk told The Hollywood Reporter that Gervais “definitely crossed the line.”

“Some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that’s Ricky,” he said to the trade in January. “When you hire Ricky Gervias, you expect the unexpected.”

In fact, those jokes played a central role in the sitcom “Life’s Too Short” this week, when Johnny Depp (jokingly) confronted Gervais over his torts about Depp’s acting in “The Tourist.”

In the preview, the duo has an awkward meeting before it is revealed that Depp is still holding a grudge about the Golden Globes jokes. “I’m fine, man,” Depp says in the show. “Just doing another film that’s going to make loads of money, probably a lot more money than any film you’ve ever made. And you?”

The series will make its way to our side of the Atlantic on HBO next year.
