Last night, “The Daily Show” had a wacky episode that was sometimes hilarious, sometimes super-sincere, and other times simply head-scratching. More than anything, though, the seams were showing on the veteran Comedy Central show, and Jon Stewart and company really didn’t seem to care.
We’ll start with the funny: Adam Sandler came on the show to promote “Jack and Jill,” and the two old friends talked mostly about how their wives and daughters are controlling their lives. Sandler, dressed in a corduroy “shacket” (Jon’s term for shirt-jacket) that looked like it was two sizes too big for him, talked about how the women in his life were sick of him dressing in the same T-shirts and jeans he’s seemingly had since his “SNL” days. Sandler’s wife supposedly bought the “shacket” for him, but we refuse to believe that a wife would buy such a sack-like garment for her husband, no matter how much money they had. Stewart, for his part, talked about his daughter asking him, “Daddy, why do you smell?”
Before the henpeck-fest, though, Stewart did a fantastically funny take on Rick Perry’s flub during the last Republican presidential debate, calling it “53 seconds that can change a man’s life.” He was referring to the comedic gold the clip held, but he might as well have been talking about the damage this might do to Perry’s campaign. It was such a goldmine that Wyatt Cenac, John Oliver and Samantha Bee showed their pleasure over it in a very visual way.
Then, we turned to the sincere, when Stewart gave the show’s take on the Penn State molestation scandal. Stewart knew that his rant about Joe Paterno and everyone else who covered up Jerry Sandusky‘s abuse wasn’t all that funny, and he and the crew openly debated whether they should air the piece or just continue the Sandler interview. Before throwing it to the Moment of Zen, Stewart said he’ll “funny it up” the next time, but said “that one in particular had the staff and me a little galled.”
