‘SNL’ Recap: ‘The Devil’ Weighs in on Penn State

“Saturday Night Live” tried to derive comedy from last week’s sordid sex allegations at Penn State and the related fall-out that resulted from it.

If nothing else, the segment, which was part of “Weekend Update” on Saturday night’s show on NBC, demonstrated just how difficult it can be to deal comedically with a situation where mirth is in short supply.

So, “Weekend Update” anchor Seth Meyers called on “the devil” – played by Jason Sudeikis – to weigh in on the scandal. Basically, the approach was: Bring the devil in and have even him be revolted about what happened. Did it work? Judging by the level of laughter we heard while watching the show, we concluded that the reaction of the studio audience was mixed, even uncomfortable at times.

This weekend’s “SNL” was hosted by Emma Stone, with musical guest Coldplay. And, other than the Penn State scandal, the other subject in the news last week was the weekly Republican debate, the one on CNBC on Wednesday that featured Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s historic flub.

“SNL” dealt with this irresistible topic right away — in the opening of the show.

Among the other highlights of Saturday’s show, Andy Samberg starred in a “digital short” – as a lovelorn, egotistical pop star trying in vain to produce a music video as the weather refuses to cooperate. While watching this one, we kept thinking of “Flight of the Conchords,” who made the best music spoofs ever seen on TV. Whatever happened to those guys?

Meanwhile, you can watch Andy Samberg in “Wish It Would Rain” right here:
