The folks at “Live! With Regis and Kelly” — soon to be “Live! With Kelly after Regis Philbin leaves on Friday — have announced that Neil Patrick Harris will be sitting alongside Kelly Ripa for the entire week after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28 – Dec. 2., reports The Hollywood Reporter.
NPH has been one of the go-to substitute co-hosts for “Live! With Regis and Kelly” over the last few years. He’s co-hosted the show whenever he’s been in New York (for the Tonys or just to hang out on a break from “HIMYM”), and the chemistry between him and Ripa is right up there with the show’s other reliable subs, like Anderson Cooper and Mr. Ripa himself, Mark Consuelos. This will be the first of the announced guest hosts — Jerry Seinfeld is the other — who will be hosting for an entire week. Guests on NPH’s week of shows will include Betty White, Maya Rudolph and Angie Harmon.
Of course, neither Seinfeld nor NPH will be under consideration to be sitting next to Ripa on a permanent basis, and the show will be using the post-Regis period to find out who their permanent co-host will be, much in the same way that Ripa was chosen to co-host with Philbin in 2001. The intriguing period is when producer Michael Gelman and company start announcing guest co-hosts that we all know will have an interest in the job, because, while Jerry and Neil will be fun co-hosts to watch, we want to know who is going to get the job. Will it be Dana Carvey? Consuelos? Andy Cohen? Someone out of left field, like Ripa was? It’ll be fun to watch.
