The Muppets are back and for those with a fondness for Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang, they are introducing a shortened version of their memorable “Mahna Mahna” song, featuring Neil Patrick Harris, Rashida Jones, Sarah Silverman, Kristen Schaal and “Modern Family”‘s Rico Rodriguez, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The twist? The video is part of the promotion for today’s opening “The Muppets,” and is a letter to fans telling them that they can join in on the “Mahna Mahna” fun at MuppetsMahnaMahna.com, where they can upload clips of themselves singing the song.
“The Muppets,” which is expected to be No. 1 at the box office this weekend, stars Jason Segel, Amy Adams and Chris Cooper. It is a little bit of art imitating life. As “The Muppets,” directed by James Bobin, is the comeback for our favorite Jim Henson characters, so, too, is the plot of the film. In it, the Muppet’s cast needs to reunite to save the Muppet Theater, which is going to be razed by nefarious oilman Tex Richman (Cooper) who wants to drill for the bonanza of newly discovered oil that lies underneath.
“Mahna Mahna,” which was wrtten by Piero Umiliani, and is only a little less stick-in-your-brain song than “It’s a Small World,” first appeared in the Italian film “Sweden: Heaven and Hell” before being sung on both “The Muppet Show” and “Sesame Street.”
