Remember when Piers Morgan was hyping up his new CNN talk show on Twitter and wherever else people could hear him, self-proclaiming that the interviews he was doing would be fascinating and that he’s one of the best interviewers that was ever created?
Well, all of that may be true, but not a lot of people are tuning in to find out. The ratings for “Piers Morgan Tonight,” according to Deadline, are at their lowest ebb; November was his lowest month in the 25-54 demo. In fact, he’s delivering four percent less viewers in that demo than the guy he replaced, Larry King, was attracting at the same time last year.
There are a lot of factors at play here, of course, including CNN’s general ratings problems. But one problem that’s specific to Morgan’s show is that he hasn’t had a buzzworthy interview since he talked to Charlie Sheen ten months ago. In a world where a show needs to do all it can do to get viewers — King’s ratings near the end might have come from habitual viewers who had no loyalty to Piers — CNN and Morgan need to do more to make people want to tune in. Let the Casey Anthony push begin!
