UPDATE 12/9/11: “Mythbusters” hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage visited the neighborhood that got blasted by the wayward cannonball and apologized for the incident, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Though the hosts weren’t at the bomb range when the incident happened, they were mortified and promise the footage won’t air. “Honestly, the feeling of embarrassment is not something we’re indulging in right now. We feel for the families and the people affected by this,” said Savage.
The guys at “Mythbusters” test all sorts of weapons to prove or disprove urban legends. But on Tuesday, one of the projectiles they shot went a whole lot further than they anticipated. It ended up bouncing across an entire northern California neighborhood, leaving busted plaster and broken glass in its wake.
The account from the San Francisco Chronicle feels almost like it comes out of a movie: A cannonball shot from a homemade cannon missed the water containers designed to stop it. It bounced out of the Alameda County Sheriff’s bomb disposal range, where “Mythbusters” does many of their explosive tests, and through a residential area in neighboring Dublin, poking holes through walls and windows, skipping across six-lane roads, and finally smashing through a minivan, destroying its dashboard as it settled on the floor.
And the most miraculous part of the story? No one got injured. This cannonball smashed through bedrooms where people were sleeping, but hit no one. It didn’t hit any moving cars, and it didn’t happen to catch an unaware pedestrian by surprise. Either Dublin, CA is the luckiest town in the United States or the streets are abandoned after dark.
Either way, the show’s insurance company will have to pay for all the damages. This is the first time such an accident has happened to the show at that particular location, but accidents have happened during other shoots, according to the Chronicle. Maybe the people in those neighborhoods should up their insurance, too… just in case.
