‘SNL’: Alec Baldwin Apologizes to Himself for Airline Incident

Alec Baldwin turned up in a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in a comedy bit in which he played an American Airlines pilot who “apologized” to him for the way the airline booted him from a flight last week.

And it was Baldwin himself who played the mustachioed pilot — “Capt. Steve Rogers” — who delivered his “apology” on “Weekend Update” on “SNL” Saturday night on NBC, guest-hosted by Katy Perry.

“Alec, are you sure this is the right way to handle this?” asked “Update” anchor Seth Meyers after Baldwin/”Rogers” offered the apology.

“Yeah, keep going, keep going!” Baldwin whispered in reply.

So Meyers “played along” as “Capt. Rogers” declared Alec Baldwin to be “an American treasure” and said he’s “ashamed” at the way the actor was treated. Of course, in real life, Baldwin allegedly refused to turn off his cell phone when directed to do so before takeoff from L.A. because he was apparently embroiled in an interactive word game on his cell.

Our take: We happen to agree with Meyers (even if he was “objecting” with his tongue in cheek) — Baldwin shouldn’t have come on a comedy show to joke about delaying an entire flight of people, making a public spectacle of himself and, perhaps most importantly, violating (allegedly) federal law that governs behavior on airplane flights. Hey, we’re just sayin’ . . .

Meanwhile, this weekend’s “SNL” also had a timely, superlative spoof of the just-released movie “New Year’s Eve” — the movie with a cast of (seemingly) dozens of stars. In “SNL’s” spoof, the movie is a sequel to “New Year’s Eve” called “Apocalypse.” What made it so funny: Some spot-on impersonations such as Kristen Wiig as Drew Barrymore, Katy Perry as Christina Aguilera, Bill Hader as Alan Alda and more.

This one was a scream — watch it right here:

Speaking of magical nights, this weekend’s “SNL” had a sketch titled “One Magical Night,” about a chance meeting between two very well-matched people in a piano bar. We were very impressed with Jason Sudeikis’ vocal skills as a lounge singer. And the sketch’s “punch line”? Well, we didn’t see that coming!
