‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ Canceled by ABC

At one point “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” was one of ABC’s biggest shows. But after nine seasons and declining ratings, ABC has decided to cancel the show as a weekly series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The show will be allowed to complete its ninth season in its Friday night timeslot, but it won’t come back on a weekly basis. Instead, the show will produce four specials to be aired next season.

“EMHE” hasn’t been doing very well since ABC moved it to Friday this season; it’s last installment only attracted just over 5 million viewers in the 18-49 demo, according to THR.

A clue that the show was on shaky ground was when “EMHE” host Ty Pennington agreed to host the new ABC talk show “The Revolution.” Now Pennington will have time to host that and do the four teardown-and-rebuild projects per year that “EMHE” was known for.

Who knows? Maybe with a limited number of episodes, the show will do more spectacular projects. We’d like to see them tear down a whole apartment building and rebuild them as townhouses in the span of a week. Now that they have more time to plan, it should be possible… right?
