HBO Cancels ‘Hung,’ ‘Bored To Death,’ ‘How To Make It’, Renews ‘Enlightened’

HBO is a network that doesn’t tend to make a ton of programming changes at the same time. But today, it gave good news to one of its newer shows while saying goodbye to a bunch of veteran comedies. According to Deadline, the network has cancelled “Hung,” “Bored to Death” and “How to Make It In America,” while picking up Golden Globe nominee “Enlightened.”

No particular reasons were given for the cancellations, as “Hung” was the highest-rated show among the four on the list, and star Thomas Jane also picked up a Globe nod last week. But, as Deadline points out, ratings aren’t the determining factor for HBO, a network that keeps little-watched but quality shows on for years (cough“Treme”cough).

One thing that may have been a factor, at least in the cases of “Hung” and “Bored,” was that they may have felt that after three seasons each, the shows had played out their premises. On the other hand, “Enlightened” is completing its first season, and the Globe nods — for the show and star Laura Dern — were likely a good indication to HBO that the show has some legs.
