David Letterman welcomed CNN’s Anderson Cooper in the latest installment of “Late Show,” and given all of Letterman’s political guests in recent weeks, it was no surprise when the presidential race entered the conversation.

Letterman seemed particularly interested in two separate reported confrontations GOP candidate Newt Gingrich had with locals who disagreed with his political stances. Letterman said that the way Gingrich handled himself didn’t make the contender look good.

“I’d engage that guy,” Letterman said of the voter who shouted an obscenity at the conservative, telling Cooper that instead of walking away, he would have asked the person “What can I do to help you change your mind?”

Cooper took a pragmatic approach, noting that “I think they are seeing so many people on any given day, they are just moving along,” and recapped how President Obama’s one-time confrontation with Joe the Plumber only seemed to help Joe.

Letterman countered that speaking with the man would only make him look better.

“If you want to be considered presidential material, maybe this is an opportunity to come out looking good.”
