Demi Lovato has been in the public eye lately for lots of other issues besides her acting, and now that she’s trying to get her life in order, she wants to make sure her former employers get the message. Lovato, who sought treatment last year for bulimia and bipolar disorder, heard a line on the Disney Channel show “Shake It Up!” and took to Twitter over the holiday weekend to voice her displeasure.
The line, according to Us Weekly, was “I could just eat you up, well if I ate.” Lovato’s response to that line couldn’t hide her anger. “I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress’ from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke about that very disease….. #nice,” she tweeted. The “Sonny With A Chance” star went on to muse about how “the actress’ (sic) getting THINNER AND THINNER….” and pined for the days when shows like “That’s So Raven” and “Lizzie McGuire” had more normal-looking stars in Raven-Symoné and Hilary Duff.
For their part, the Disney Channel PR department tweeted back that they’re listening to their former star. “We hear you & are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible & reevaluating them. It’s NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders!”
Lovato has a point. Why would Disney approve a line where a teenager says she doesn’t eat? Isn’t it tough enough for teen and pre-teen girls to deal with body images without their favorite shows making it fodder for comedy? It’s one thing for adult sitcoms to joke about it — and those jokes are questionable. But we wonder if the Disney Channel folks are going to take a closer look at their sitcom scripts after Lovato brought the topic to light.
