“All My Children’s” Jesse and Angie are reuniting on “The Young & the Restless.” According to Soap Opera Digest Darnell Williams will be joining his longtime co-star Debbi Morgan on the soap. Morgan joined the cast of Y&R in late September, immediately after the conclusion of AMC, taking on the role of Harmony, a drug addict in recovery trying to reconnect with her son after a lifetime of failing him — the polar opposite of the upstanding doctor she played on AMC. No details have been released about the character Williams will be playing or how long he will be on the show.
Jesse and Angie were arguably the most popular African-American couple in daytime history. The characters were teenagers when Morgan and Williams began playing them in the early 1980s. After they departed AMC, Morgan reprised the character of Angie on the soaps “Loving” and “The City,” where Williams played Jacob, a man who happened to look just like Jesse. The duo returned to AMC in 2009, when the presumed dead Jesse turned out to be alive and well.
Several soap stars who played supercouples on one show have reunited on others, with underwhelming results. Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans sizzled as “Days of Our Lives” Patch and Kayla, but flopped as Stefan and Katherine on “General Hospital.” Lane Davies and Nancy Lee Grahn delighted fans as “Santa Barbara’s” Mason and Julia, but failed to recapture the magic as Cameron and Alexis on “General Hospital.” Will Morgan and Williams be able to break the supercouple curse? Stay tuned.
