Can’t NBC Leave Poor Michele Bachmann Alone?

Jay Leno was the latest NBC late-night personality to skewer Michele Bachmann when his staff produced a bit in which Bachmann is seen on-screen for a minute or so with her face contorted in various hideous ways.

The bit was part of Leno’s monologue Wednesday night on NBC’s “Tonight Show” — later in the same day that the conservative Minnesota congresswoman dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination following a loss in the Iowa Caucus Tuesday.

When we caught this on Wednesday night’s show, we couldn’t help but be reminded of the dust-up last November when Jimmy Fallon’s band, The Roots, “welcomed” Bachmann onto NBC’s “Late Night” by playing a song called “Lyin’ Ass Bitch.”

Hey, we’re not even particular fans or supporters of Bachmann, but we don’t think anyone deserves to be treated this way. In the final analysis, our take is this: If Fallon’s band hadn’t played that underhanded trick on her (after all, she was a guest on the show), then Leno’s bit would have been OK under the rules of late-night comedy we all live by. But taken together, we couldn’t help forming the impression that someone at NBC just really dislikes Bachmann.

Meanwhile, if you play the video above, you might want to stick around for the guest segments — first Tracy Morgan from “30 Rock” and then brothers Rick and Corey Harrison of History Channel’s “Pawn Stars.”
