Ryan Seacrest “can’t imagine life without ‘Idol.'” Both Seacrest and Fox execs made it clear at TCA on Sunday that they want Seacrest to remain hosting TV’s No. 1 show beyond this season. But according to Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly, a “tough negotiation” is in order before Seacrest’s “American Idol” contract runs out at the end of this season.
“I can tell you that regarding ‘American Idol,’ I love it,” Seacrest told reporters. Fox alternative programming president Mike Darnell seconded the notion, saying, “We love Ryan. He’s an enormous part of this television show. My expectation is he’ll last as long as the show – and hopefully that’s forever.”
What remains to be seen is whether Seacrest will take over for Matt Lauer on the “Today” show once Lauer’s contract expires. Seacrest remained tight-lipped on the subject, saying he couldn’t comment on recent reports. All he offered was, “I have a deal with NBCUniversal that we’re in negotiations discussing what I’ll do, but I already work there.”
When questioned whether he would ever consider switching teams and batting for NBC’s “The Voice,” he responded tersely, “At this point, I only see myself hosting ‘American Idol.'”
