Tonight: Last Case for Marg Helgenberger on ‘CSI’

TV’s longest goodbye (at the present time, anyway) continues Wednesday night on CBS with Part Two of Marg Helgenberger’s last case on “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”

Her two-hour adios to the CBS series after 11-1/2 seasons began last week with a case involving an old friend (guest-star Annabeth Gish) who suddenly materialized in need of assistance from law enforcement.

Last week’s episode began in typical “CSI” fashion — a bloodbath — this one taking place late one afternoon in the offices of a high-powered attorney. In fact, this hit team was so “professional” (why is it that killers are so often portrayed as “professional” in movies and TV shows, like they’re doctors or something?) that their post-bloodbath clean-up seemed to leave no clues behind.

“Seemed” is the operative word, of course, whenever the CSIs of “CSI” turn up with their infrared lights and Luminol. And voila: After just a few minutes, Sara (Jorja Fox) and Morgan (Elisabeth Harnois) had doped out the entire scenario — except whodunit (that came later).

What’s this have to do with the pending exit of Catherine Willows (Helgenberger)? You won’t find that out until Wednesday night (Jan. 25) — 10/9c on CBS.

Suffice it to say that Willows’ life is in danger, thanks to that old friend, who shared some secrets that could get Willows killed.

In Wednesday night’s Part Two — which we screened recently — the case involving the old friend becomes even more complicated, while, along the way, we learn some interesting tidbits about Willows’ backstory — and who doesn’t like a good “origin story”?

How will “CSI” ever fill the void left by Helgenberger? With another actress, of course: Elisabeth Shue, the “Leaving Las Vegas” star who’s returning to Vegas on “CSI.” Her first episode is Feb. 15.

Meanwhile, Helgenberger’s last episode — titled “Willows in the Wind” (a clever turn on the old children’s book title “The Wind in the Willows”) — airs Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 10/9c on CBS.
