After the runaway success of last year’s “The Force” ad (which we prefer to call “Little Darth Vader”), Volkswagen has created a sequel of sorts, to air during the Super Bowl. The spot starts out innocuously enough, with a house-bound dog wanting to chase the new Beetle but finding he’s too big to fit through his doggie door. A montage shows what he does to fix the situation.
The sequel part comes in the spot’s last 20 seconds, where a motley but very familiar group of viewers critique the ad against last year’s commercial.
It’s not a bad move on VW’s part to bring the kid back, considering how popular he was. And the ad is structured so that the “Dog Strikes Back” part can be stand on its own and used repeatedly until the next Super Bowl. George Lucas couldn’t have done it any better…
