Powerhouse actor Andre Braugher, who played a ship’s captain in the 2006 movie “Poseidon,” has been cast for the role of a submarine skipper in a new prospective drama series from executive producer Shawn Ryan.
This casting news is being reported by Deadline.com here.
Titled “The Last Resort” and being considered by ABC for a series, the show has to do with a rogue U.S. nuclear submarine which disobeys a “suspicious” order and then takes over a remote island, where the officers and crew declare themselves to be an independent nation.
It sounds like serious stuff, although the “Last Resort” title makes it sound like they not only establish a new country but might also be starting up a fun-loving island resort — you know, like “Fantasy Island” — though that’s not at all clear in the Deadline story. Plus, that would be out of character for either Braugher or Ryan, both of whom are known for serious TV dramas.
Ryan produced “The Shield” for FX — probably the grittiest cop series ever produced. More recently, Ryan has produced “Lie to Me,” “The Unit” and “The Chicago Code,” among others. And Braugher is known for, among other things, NBC’s “Homicide” and TNT’s “Men of a Certain Age” (the late, lamented Ray Romano drama for and about aging men).
