6 Best Performances from the ‘Smash’ Premiere

As is expected of a behind-the-scenes drama about the creation of a Broadway musical, Monday night’s “Smash” premiere delivered more than a few exciting performances. So what were the best? Below, our take:

1) Katharine McPhee opens the show with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”: Karen has big dreams of a world outside of Kansas Iowa. But those aspirations are cut short when a bored casting director doesn’t share her vision:

2) Megan Hilty shows off her “belty” pipes: Ivy Lynn can belt! Our first introduction to the Marilyn wannabe’s pipes comes in the form of a demo audition for the musical’s first song.  (Later, it’s leaked on the hilariously named YouLenz):

3) The Baseball Number!: For all the talk of the “baseball number,” Derek’s staging of “National Pastime” pays off with impeccable choreography and Ivy Lynn effectively playing the part of a sexed-up Marilyn:

4) Karen is “Beautiful”: It’s the first real goosebumps moment for both the at-home audience and Karen’s audition room as McPhee performs a pitch-perfect rendition of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”:

5) Mr. President, Denied: Decked out in Derek’s shirt -and nothing else – Karen gives the creepy director exactly what he’s looking for…minus what he’s actually looking for:

6) Two Stars, One Marilyn: The closing scene juxtaposes the two Marilyns vying for the part with a high-octane performance of “Let Me Be Your Star”:
