The Originals’ black tie gala was the scariest dance since “Carrie.”  Esther (Alice Evans) has come back to life to kill all of her children because she believes they are abominations! Elena agreed to help her, donating her blood so that Esther could cast a spell that linked all of the originals together. Kill one, and they all will die. It appears to be the only way to kill Klaus. Meanwhile, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) showed Caroline (Candice Accola) his sensitive, artistic side. Rebekah brought Matt as her date, then decided to kill him, then changed her mind because he is such a nice guy. Stefan (Paul Wesley) admitted that he does care about Elena (Nina Dobrev), while she told Damon (Ian Somerhalder)he needed to stop caring so much about her. This naturally resulted in Damon having hot sex with Rebekah (Claire Holt). Executive producer Julie Plec discussed television’s most tortured love triangle and how the Original gangstas will impact “Vampire Diaries” for the rest of the season.

The Triangle

There are some trying times ahead for both Team Damon and Team Stefan. “Obviously, we’re at a little bit of a crossroads with Elena and the boys. She’s starting to understand Stefan’s whole, “I’m filled with nothing but rage and anger and no love and no humanity” wall has crumbled and he’s actually the only one preventing himself from truly letting his feelings back in and becoming his old self. And, of course, Damon who she’s grown closer and closer to, [she]  just put her foot in it big time with him.” Plec sees Damon and Rebekah’s dirty sex as a sort of progress for the bad boy. “The thing with Damon is that when he’s hurt, he lashes out. In a way, this is both the most cruel way he could have lashed out but yet also shows a peculiar evolution in him as a character because rather than take it out on an innocent human in the middle of the road, he’s striking where it hurts most, probably, and very specifically at Elena.” But the storyline is truly about Elena. “I think a lot of what we’re going to start to see is the question for Elena which is, ‘Here’s this person that I love and still love so much and here is this friend that I have made, this friendship that has grown complicated. And, at the middle of it all, I’m still that girl that is not entirely sure that she’s supposed to be in love with any vampires, much less two.’ So we’ll really be exploring her point-of-view a lot for the rest of the season. Certainly I can say that you’re not going to get to the end of the season without all three of them understanding that a choice needs to be made one way or the other.”

The Plot to Kill Klaus

Despite Esther’s plan, it’s going to be difficult to get rid of Klaus. “I definitely think that if the villains on our show have proven anything from the beginning, it’s that they have a durability that… borders on supernatural, their ability to hurt, their ability to sense things that are wrong, and of course their ability to survive what seems to be certain doom and death. There’s five Originals and an Original Mama and we’ll see who comes out the other side of it all to tell the tale…The next episode, takes place on a full moon and we’ll learn like most of the heavy duty witch spells, their needs to be some sort of celestial event or recurring element attached to it. So that’s what she meant by that.”

Caroline and Klaus May Not Become Klaroline

The evil hybrid drew her a picture of a horse, but that does not mean they will become a couple. “For us, it’s fun to explore that side of Klaus, seeing a romantic vulnerability there because it is giving us a window into him a little bit. What we love also is watching Caroline who at the beginning of the series, before she was a vampire, was just desperate to be chosen by anyone. And now the king of all vampires has plucked her from obscurity in his mind and said, ‘I bestow upon you my affection and my gifts and my flirtation.’ And our girl who has come so far is sort of like, ‘Talk to the hand, buddy.’ To see her take that stance against him and in defense of Tyler (Michael Trevino) is also a really big deal for her. But we certainly find Klaus to be irresistible on a lot of levels… presumably some of the audience does too so it will be interesting to see how that moves forward.”

Matt Is Suddenly Important

Until recently, the little used Matt (Zach Roerig) was many fans pick for Most Likely To Get Killed. Now, Matt matters. “Matt’s in a wonderful situation right now where he finds himself right smack in the epicenter of everybody else’s business. There he is, the guy that’s always been kind of on the periphery now finding the fact that he’s a human, the good friend, the nice guy, the gentleman with the varsity jacket, he’s right there in the middle of a lot of attention from a lot of people. I think that ultimately the power of his ability to be a friend and to be there certainly for Elena in times of need that are yet to come will keep showing us that part of Matt that, screentime be damned, is one of the fundamentally most important characters on the show in what he represents in that he is that guy who’s just trying to get through life and maybe get out of this town one day, maybe have a normal life free of vampires and ghosts and supernatural which essentially is kind of what we wish for all of our characters. It’s just not all of them are going to be able to achieve it.

Bonnie and Abby Bond

“Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Abby (Persia White) are going to find themselves enlisted by Esther, herself a witch and one of the servants of nature, to help in this spell that would help eliminate Klaus. So it’s all kind of coming back around to that and a blood line that originated with Ayanna 1000 years ago and had a hand in all this and now Bonnie and her mom are actually the keys to be able to see it all through. So it’s going to bring them closer and it’s also going to add some emotional consequences into their relationship.
