Watch: Tireless Joan Rivers is Unstoppable at Age 78

Sometimes, you just have to step back and marvel at another person’s energy.

In this case, it’s Joan Rivers, who’s 78 years old and yet, she buzzes from place to place with the stamina of someone half her age. Her tireless goal: To remain in the limelight — a target she seems to be hitting with astonishing regularity lately.

We’ve all observed this phenomenon from time to time: The celebrity who is suddenly so ubiquitous that it seems as if you can’t turn on your TV without seeing her (or him). Kathy Griffin is one of these. Right now, Joan Rivers is another.

What fascinates us about Joan is this: The fact that she’s on TV so much would indicate that she’s still at the height of her popularity. And yet, we always figured that her comedy was an acquired taste. Or, to put it another way: The one-liners she gets off are so profane and politically incorrect that we are often puzzled about how viewers, particularly younger ones not accustomed to her old-school, “smoky nightclub” style, react to her.

Nevertheless, there she was on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Tuesday night making jokes about death, passing gas, and Filipinos who eat dogs. To quote one of her catchphrases, “It was just . . . !”

Joan continued in the same vein for her entire appearance on “Kimmel,” commenting crudely (but hilariously) on subjects such as her sex life, surprise parties and Angelina Jolie at the Oscars. Jimmy asked her how she would have reacted if Sacha Baron Cohen had poured an urn of ashes on her on the Oscars red carpet (as he did to Ryan Seacrest). Joan would not have approved. Said she: “I would have been out of my mind!”

In the third and final portion of their interview, Joan and Jimmy talked about her reality series, “Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best,” now in its second season on WE (airing Tuesday nights at 9/8c — it aired just hours before the Kimmel show with guest-star Carol Burnett). Among other topics, Joan and Jimmy talked about Joan’s 10-year-old grandson, Cooper (he’s Melissa Rivers’ only child), who just might be the most pleasant, well-mannered child on TV today. One of the joys of watching “Joan & Melissa” — besides Joan’s non-stop patter — is seeing her interact with Cooper. At those moments, they’re like any other family — she’s a doting grandmother and he’s an adoring grandson.

Here in Part Three, Joan reveals what she wants for her grandson’s future:

How popular is Joan these days? Besides her WE show, her appearances on other people’s shows, and her frequent appearances hawking jewelry, clothes and accessories on QVC (and also performing her standup act all over the place), she’s still “critiquing” celebrity fashion (actually, she’s tearing it to shreds) on her other show, “Fashion Police,” on E! — for which daughter Melissa is executive producer. On Monday night, “Fashion Police” had an hourlong post-Oscar special — a prelude to the half-hour show expanding to an hour starting March 9. As usual, Joan was savage in her assessments of what some of the stars wore to the Academy Awards.
