Last night’s episode of “Modern Family” was the funniest of the season, filled with fantastic one-off jokes, visual puns, and lots and lots of funny hits of truth.
The truth came when Phil (Ty Burrell) decried that he’s facing the “Satan’s trifecta” on his favorite day, Leap Day. What is that trifecta? Claire (Julie Bowen), Haley (Sarah Hyland) and Alex (Ariel Winter) all having their periods at the same time. The boys are so scared that Manny (Rico Rodriguez) goes home and Luke (Nolan Gould) pours fake blood all over himself in an attempt to escape.
But the funniest moment was a joke that came when Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) tries to plan a “Wizard of Oz”-themed party for Cam’s (Eric Stonestreet) birthday. He opens the door to two guys carrying flying monkey suits. “Hey,” says one. “Hey,” says the other. “We’re the monkeys,” says the first guy.
Listen to the joke play out in the clip above and you’ll get the idea why it’s so funny. It’s a unique take-off on the theme song to the show “The Monkees,” which aired on the same day that Davy Jones passed away. So, while the joke was there merely by coincidence, it makes for a funny tribute and send-off for Jones. Co-creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd couldn’t have planned that out even if they tried.
