What would “Downton Abbey” be like without the Dowager Countess of Grantham or Matthew Crawley?

According to new stories, there is a chance that fans of the PBS Series might find out.

UK publication The Mirror is reporting that Dame Maggie Smith and actor Dan Stevens may not return to the manor following the completion of season three, which is now being taped.

The report states that most of the main cast has signed on for season four and five of the hit show, including family patriarch Hugh Bonneville and on-screen wife Elizabeth McGovern, as well as Michelle Dockery (aka Lady Mary), Joanne Froggatt (Anna) and Brendan Coyle (Bates). However, Smith and Stevens, along with Siobhan Finneran, who plays Miss O’Brien, and Jessica Brown Findlay, who stars as Lady Sybil Branson, have not yet signed the dotted line.

The article states, however, that negotiations could be coming soon.

Of course, as previously reported, actress Shirley MacLaine is already across the pond where she will be guest starring in the new season as Lady Crawley’s mother.
