Critics Howl Over Latest Risque Routine on ‘Dance Moms’

“Dance Moms” has done it again — igniting controversy over yet another risque dance routine involving the show’s preteen dance troupers.

And it’s true: This routine was over-the-top — it was literally an “interpretation” of a dance routine with adult, burlesque origins. It happened on Tuesday’s episode of the Lifetime reality series, as the show’s take-no-prisoners dance teacher Abby Lee Miller had her young students performing a sexy “fan dance.”

Abby even admitted on the show that this dance is designed to give the “illusion” of nudity. “The idea with the fan dance is that you cover your body with the fans so you give the illusion that you’re nude underneath,” Abby explained with no hint of regret or apology in her tone of voice.

In a “fan dance,” feathered “fans” are flourished, well, erotically, while the dancers wear flesh-toned bras — giving that illusion of nudity. Fan dances are commonly found these days in the showrooms of Las Vegas casinos, in shows in which the dancers are, in fact, nude or seminude.

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s show, “Dance Moms” and its teacher are coming in for harsh criticism. Among the critics: The ladies of “The View.”

On “The View” on Wednesday, the ladies voiced some very strong opinions about this episode of “Dance Moms.” Among them: Guest-host Raven-Symone, herself a former child star (from “The Cosby Show”), who called for someone (she didn’t specify who) to go “to jail for something like that.” Yes, she felt that strongly about the situation. Co-host Sherri Shepherd accused the show of “sexualizing” children.

In the above clip, it was Barbara Walters, the shrewd TV veteran, who opined that Miller knows “exactly what she’s doing” in choreographing these risque performances in order to make headlines and generate conversation about “Dance Moms.”

Indeed, this past Tuesday’s episode drew 2.7 million viewers, the highest viewership yet for any episode of the show, Lifetime said.
