This is after the producers had a brief tribute during an episode that aired the week after Houston died, an episode that coincidentally had a performance of “I Will Always Love You” by Amber Riley.
Why is it interesting? Because producers Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan seem to be integrating the tribute tightly into the season-ending storyline where the seniors in New Directions are trying to figure out what to do after graduation. According to E!, the seniors will have a hard time coming to grips with the fact that they’re leaving, which will parallel with coming to grips that Whitney is no longer with us.
Considering previous tribute episodes — the Britney Spears, Madonna, Michael Jackson episodes come to mind — had very little semblance of story, with dialogue seemingly serving as yappy filler until they got to the next song, this news has us taking notice. There will be eight Whitney songs in the episode, and it’ll be interesting to see how the producing trio and their writers wrap story around these songs, given that some other set of songs were likely planned for this episode before Whitney passed away.
No air date is set for this episode yet, but given the late date, we expect to see it during May sweeps.
