Who would ever bother comparing the tribulations of the Kardashian clan with the high drama and small-screen artistry of AMC’s “Mad Men”?
Well, at least three celebs have come out recently with statements deriding the Kardashians and their stranglehold on reality television that hold Kim and her famed sisters up for comparison against higher-toned forms of popular entertainment, including AMC’s multiple award-winning drama series about Madison Avenue ad agencies in the 1960s (which starts its long-awaiting fifth season on March 25).
The latest was “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm, who referred to both Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian when he complained in a European magazine interview that “being a f**king idiot” is “celebrated” in today’s pop culture. The Huffington Post has the story about Hamm’s interview in the UK edition of Elle right here. “Whether it’s Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian or whoever, stupidity is certainly celebrated,” Hamm is quoted as saying. “Being a f**king idiot is a valuable commodity in this culture because you’re rewarded significantly.”
“Incuriousness has become cool . . .,” he went on. “It’s celebrated. It doesn’t make sense to me!”
Is Hollywood ganging up on the Kardashians? It seems so — the HuffPo story mentioned several other top stars who slammed the family recently, including: “James Bond” star Daniel Craig, who called them “f**king idiots” in an interview last November in an interview with another British mag — British GQ.
And Jonah Hill made a similar comment to HuffPo in December, the Web site notes: “The fact that the Kardashians could be more popular than a show like ‘Mad Men’ is disgusting. It’s super disgusting to be a part of that culture,” said the portly star of “Superbad.”
My take: Whoa, hold on there, Hollywood! Hey, I agree that sometimes the so-called “plotlines” on the Kardashian reality shows are so feather-light that they threaten to blow away in the slightest breeze, but the Kardashians have the same rights as any Hammy actor to make a living. And while their shows on E! are not exactly appointment viewing for me, I give mad props to anyone who can maneuver multiple TV shows on to the air at any one time and make a pile of dough at it.
Or, to put it another way, if the Kardashians are idiots, then may some of their idiocy rub off on me!
